Doppelganger

Her pants came out in uneven spurts as she breathlessly ran from the shadows following at her heels. She tried to outrun them but they always somehow managed to get to her. She ran through the labyrinthine alleys, her pace slowing. She ran till she could run no more; her predator finally embracing her into its chilly embrace. A sense of familiarity hit as she realized what she had been running from: herself.  She could no longer carry on. Succumbing to her illness, she watched as her soul departed, leaving an empty vessel, a doppelganger, for the world to see.
